Sonoma County Executives Association lost one of our own on Monday, January 28, 2019. Mike Kelly was a member of SCEA for 25 years. He was serving on our board of directors, as he has many times before. We spent our last meeting sharing our stories of Mike and feeling the tremendous loss to our organization and to each of us as individuals.

Here is a duplication of the home page of Mike’s “The Real Estate Hour” blog:

It is with tremendous sorrow, we share the news of the passing of friend and colleague, Mike Kelly.

On Monday, January 28, 2019, we lost an Icon. One of Sonoma County’s Natural Resources!

Mike Kelly was a professional and private person. He was a 2 time cancer survivor and was quietly battling a 3rd. On Monday, he lost his long time battle with Cancer.

There aren’t even enough words to express the wealth and depth of knowledge the real estate community, and Sonoma County as a whole, lost this week. For literally every situation you can imagine, Mike Kelly had a personal story, or a tid-bit of local history, or a solution for a tricky real estate transaction, and he loved to share his knowledge.

Words I’ve consistently heard when people talk about Mike (while he was here with us and since Monday) An Icon, a monument, a leader. Quick witted, feisty, kind, a big heart!  He was a true champion of homeownership and home owner rights. Licensed in 1978, Mike dedicated more than half of his life to real estate, and was proud to call himself a REALTOR – pronounced, “RealTOR” as it should be! 😉

Mike didn’t just dabble in real estate. He was committed to making us better as an industry. He had the philosophy that there was enough business to go around and instead of competing with his fellow agents, he mentored, and educated, was always available for questions, and focused on bettering the real estate industry as a whole.

Those who new Mike will agree that he never went half in to anything. He was a leader in every facet of his life. He didn’t just join a group or association, he joined in a leadership capacity. From Northbay Association of Realtors to the Santa Rosa Chapter of Norbar to California Association of Realtors, and even represented the local Women’s Council of Realtors in his role as president in 1996. In 2003 Mike was nominated by his peers to receive the Spirit Of Sonoma Award. Outside of real estate, Mike was involved in local and international Rotary, Sonoma County Executive Association, the Sonoma County Beekeepers Association, and I’m sure he’s already found a new leadership role.

Mike’s resume takes up almost 3 full pages. The list is long and impressive, including;  Awards, Designations, Realtor of the Year recognitions 2005/2008, and numerous leadership roles. Some designations include: CRS (Certified Residential Specialist, only 3% of Realtors hold this designation), SRES (Senior Residential Specialist), and CIPS (Certified International Property Specialist – he took the courses for this designation in Paris – smart guy)

He was a journalism major; an avid blogger, real estate columnist, and the voice of Real Estate for 34 years through his Real Estate Hour on KSRO, which he recently dubbed “the longest running real estate talk show in the universe”!! And, I think he can own that claim.

His tag line in real estate was “Mike Kelly, One of Sonoma County’s National Treasures” …and he can own that claim as well!

Recognizing the potential, Mike became an investor, founding member/agent, and was instrumental in the opening of the Sonoma County Keller Williams Realty offices in 2005. Since that time, Keller Williams International has become the #1 Real Estate company in the US.

I was lucky to work beside Mike for over 10 years, and pretty much every time I mentioned to another agent that I work with Mike Kelly, the response was the same; “Oh, I just love Mike Kelly” He had that effect on his peers…and really most who knew him felt the same.

There will be a service and celebration of life (time and location is yet to be determined)

Please join us on the radio to say good bye for now. Tune in to KSRO this Friday at 9-10am as Mike’s KSRO family pays tribute to the Man, the Legend, our friend and colleague, Michael J. Kelly (Mike)!! And then your calls, and more on a special 2hour edition of “the longest running real estate show in the universe!!” The Real Estate Hour with Mike Kelly on Sunday! 9-11am KSRO 1350AM 103.5FM and streaming live at KSRO.com

Thanks for the memories Mike — You left a giant hole in our collective hearts — You will be missed <3
